Taylor Swift Is Lucky to Be Marrying Travis Kelce

Don’t listen to the detractors against manhood and manliness. Taylor Swift is marrying a good man in Travis Kelce and the proof is all over her social media that she could not be happier!

Depending on whether you keep up with pop culture news or not, surely you felt a great ripple in the force when Taylor Swift became engaged to Travis Kelce? 🤣 As reporter and cultural commentator, Suzy Weiss, writing for The Free Press, put it,

you may have encountered a group of women outside hunched over a phone, gasping, or heard a scream followed by a fit of giggles followed by an ohmigod, it’s ginormous. There may have been little leaps of joy, a few are you serious-es, squeals of delight. That there was the sound of an entire generation of women getting closure on a story they’d been following for over 15 years. If you are not entirely sure who these people are, let me be the first to tell you Taylor Swift is an American singer-songwriter. She is the highest-grossing live music artist, the wealthiest female musician, and one of the best-selling music artists of all time.

Swift is the only artist to have been named the IFPI Global Recording Artist of the Year five times. A record seven of her albums have each sold over a million copies first-week in the US. Publications such as Rolling Stone and Billboard have ranked her among the greatest artists of all time. She is the first individual from the arts to be named Time Person of the Year (2023). Her accolades include 14 Grammy Awards —including a record four Album of the Year wins— and a Primetime Emmy Award. She is the most-awarded artist of the American Music Awards, the Billboard Music Awards, and the MTV Video Music Awards.

As for Travis Kelce, he is an American professional football tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League (NFL). Considered one of the greatest tight ends in history, he holds the NFL records for most consecutive and most overall seasons with 1,000 receiving yards by a tight end: seven. He holds the record for most receiving yards by a tight end in a single season with 1,416 in 2020, despite playing in only 15 games.

As of the writing of this article (2025), Kelce has won 3 Super Bowls with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Why did the announcement of the engagement of Taylor Swift to Travis Kelce send a shockwave through pop culture?

Taylor has been open about her romantic journey in public and through the lyrics of her songs since she began her singing career. Her fan base, known as Swifties, have been taken on a vicarious emotional roller coaster with their favourite singer. According to Weiss,

Swift has been singing almost exclusively about finding and losing and despairing over and hoping for true love for her entire career. It’s shot through every song. And her fans have been right there with her on her decades-long crusade of a dating life. They know that at 19 she had her heart broken by an older guy; that at 21 her famous new boyfriend didn’t show up to her birthday party; that at 26 she met an actor she thought she was going to marry only for the relationship to slowly fall apart, ending after six years.

Then, a few months later, a football player admitted on his podcast that he wished he could give his number to Taylor Swift—and now they’re getting married.

What a story! I’m almost tearing up now as I read it 🥹

Just to be clear: I am neither a fan of Taylor Swift nor of Travis Kelce. I do not really enjoy her music, although I respect her commitment to writing her own songs, and I prefer the Canadian version of gridiron football. Despite my disinterest in the couple generally, the reporting of the engagement of this pop icon to this star athlete has been quite interesting. It is most certainly a win for marriage because if Taylor Swift values marriage, then so many tweens and twenty-somethings are going to change their opinion on that great institution. Conservative commentator Ben Shapiro tweeted, “This is unironically an excellent thing. I hope many other single people follow their example.”

What has been sad, however, is the denigration of Kelce’s manhood when, in fact, his manhood is being affirmed by Swift’s acceptance of his proposal.

Let me explain.

Hypergamy For Beginners

Will Rahn, making what he calls “the straight male case for Taylor Swift’s engagement to Travis Kelce”, had this to say,

Travis is a man who is confident enough to understand that he’s outkicked his coverage, that he’s the luckiest man in the world”—a phrase he uses repeatedly … A lesser man would feel anxious running off with a genius, someone who will always, inevitably, eclipse him for the rest of his life. The mistake Rahn is making, as are so many others, is thinking that Kelce is marrying up, that Swift is way out of Kelce’s league, and he should just be comfortable with that. This is not a “straight male case” of manhood at all. In describing the Swift-Kelce engagement this way, Rahn is denigrating Kelce’s manhood.

In actual fact, it is Taylor who is the one marrying up and she knows this herself. This engagement is a straight-forward case of hypergamy. According to academic Vincent Harinam,

Hypergamy is an evolved sexual strategy where individuals mate with and/or marry those most capable of providing long term security. It is the act of marrying up. Though human males can and do engage in hypergamy, it is a concept and strategy most often attributed to females. It is an artefact born out of raw Darwinian necessity.

According to evolutionary psychologist David Buss, the dangers of our evolutionary past favoured females who were highly selective of their mates. To both survive childbirth and raise healthy offspring, early human females needed to evaluate a man’s current position as well as his potential and future trajectories. Consequentially, females typically mate above and across dominance hierarchies whereas males typically mate below and across them.

Hypergamy is often manifested though physical protection. It is thus understandable why physical characteristics like athleticism, strength, and height are prioritised by females. Rahn has assumed the pair are not on an equal footing. He believes Taylor enjoys an elevated status to Kelce, but their vocations are in entirely different fields. She is a singer-songwriter; he is an athlete. She exceeds in her field, is successful and uber-rich; he exceeds in his field, is successful and just normal-rich. That they accept each others as equals in this regard is described my Rahn:

[Kelce] admires the hell out of [Swift] … Travis says Taylor’s “the smartest woman in the world.”… He’s not authentically stupid in any way. But he recognises that while both he and his love are entertainers who perform in NFL stadiums, he’s a six-foot-five gorilla of a man who catches footballs for a living. While Taylor, he reminds us, is “the greatest songwriter of all time.” Also, he says she outworks him in the gym.

Charmingly, Taylor pushes back, noting he can “lift a car.”

He smiles as he waves away the compliment: “That’s just genetics.”

And that’s just wholesome!

Yes, Travis is quite famous in his own right. He’s won three Super Bowls. But he’s obviously the junior partner here, and appears quite comfortable taking a backseat to his megastar girlfriend. Travis gets that she’s the brains of this operation and is grateful for it. There’s no resentment, no jealousy.

In announcing the engagement on her socials, Swift put it this way: “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married.”

Despite their significantly different earning potential, Swift is the one marrying up because Kelce will exceed as a protector. He exudes and excels in the masculine virtues of strength, courage, mastery, and honour, and may even be a good man (far better than Michael Jordan). His Chiefs teammates and coaches consistently praise his character, positivity, and leadership. For example:

• Teammates note that Kelce is “everyone’s favourite teammate“, describing him as someone who makes others comfortable, brings positivity and fun to the team environment, and genuinely enjoys being at work with the group.
• When asked about his teammate Harrison Butker during a recent controversy, Kelce said he “cherishes” Butker as a teammate, acknowledged Butker treats everyone with “respect and kindness“, and asserted he himself doesn’t judge others by their views. Kelce’s handling of the controversy around his teammate showcases his empathy and emotional maturity.
• Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has also commented that Kelce is a “great person,” and the team’s leadership, including coach Andy Reid, mention Kelce’s professionalism and dedication, saying he’s currently “in a good, good place” both on and off the field.

Overall, Travis Kelce is described as respectful, fun-loving, supportive, and a positive force in the locker room. His character and leadership are well-respected among his peers and coaches.

Kelce is a high status male and according to Lyman Stone, of the Institute for Family Studies, “when men have power to influence their mate options, they tend to use that power to find a peer-age woman for companionship in life”. Be Worthy of Your ‘Taylor Swift’

The psychological processes involved in attraction in dating and bonding in marriage are based inextricably in our biology. These cannot be changed, but they can and are being interfered with by the tides of culture. See through the ideological statements of a so-called “straight male” to the facts: Swift is marrying up and could not be happier about it!

If you are a single male, then seek to understand better the process of hypergamy. You need to be seen by the females around you to be a high status male, at least compared to the males of your social group.

If you are a parent, then you need to teach your to be strong, to show courage, to become masterful at something, and to demonstrate honour among his peers. YOU must teach him how to be good at being a man FIRST, so that he too can find a mate for whom he is worthy.
